Winter Journey (Winterreise), D. 911
Author: Schubert; Müller; Fischer-Dieskau and Moore · 1827
About this work
A song cycle for voice and piano on 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller, composed by Schubert in 1827, a year before his death, and his second Müller cycle after Die schöne Müllerin. Its narrator, a rejected lover, leaves town in midwinter and wanders from one frozen scene to the next until he meets the hurdy-gurdy man of the final song. Fischer-Dieskau recorded the cycle many times, and his early-1960s EMI studio recording with Gerald Moore is widely treated as a reference; Hans Hotter, Ian Bostridge and Jonas Kaufmann have also left celebrated readings.
