L'Orfeo
Author: Claudio Monteverdi; libretto Alessandro Striggio · 1607
About this work
Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, to a libretto by Alessandro Striggio based on the Orpheus myth, was first performed at the ducal palace in Mantua on 24 February 1607, and its score was printed in Venice in 1609; it is among the earliest operas still regularly staged. Its period-instrument revival began with Nikolaus Harnoncourt's 1969 recording, and the 1978 Zurich Opera film by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and Harnoncourt was its first video recording. John Eliot Gardiner's Archiv recording (1987) and Jordi Savall's staging at the Liceu in Barcelona (2002) are further landmarks.
