About this work
Mozart's last work, a Mass for the dead commissioned anonymously by Count Franz von Walsegg in memory of his wife. When Mozart died on 5 December 1791 only the Introit was complete; Joseph Eybler took up the score and Mozart's pupil Süssmayr finally completed it, and the manuscripts are now held by the Austrian National Library. Landmark recordings include Herbert von Karajan's with the Berlin Philharmonic (1962), Claudio Abbado's Karajan memorial performance in Salzburg Cathedral (1999), and John Butt and the Dunedin Consort's reconstruction of the first performance (2014, Gramophone Award). The Tehran Symphony Orchestra performed it under Erol Erdinç in November 2015.
آخرین اثر موتسارت، مَسی برای مردگان که کنت فرانتس فون والزگ به‌طور ناشناس برای یادبود همسرش سفارش داده بود. موتسارت در ۵ دسامبر ۱۷۹۱ درگذشت و تنها بخش آغازین (اینتروئیتوس) را کامل کرده بود؛ یوزف آیبلر کار را پی گرفت و سرانجام شاگردش زوسمایر آن را تکمیل کرد، و دست‌نوشته‌ها اکنون در کتابخانهٔ ملی اتریش است. از ضبط‌های شاخص آن می‌توان به ضبط هربرت فون کارایان با فیلارمونیک برلین (۱۹۶۲)، اجرای کلودیو آبادو در یادبود کارایان در کلیسای جامع سالزبورگ (۱۹۹۹) و بازسازی نخستین اجرا به دست جان بات و گروه دانیدین (۲۰۱۴، برندهٔ جایزهٔ گرامافون) اشاره کرد. ارکستر سمفونیک تهران نیز در نوامبر ۲۰۱۵ به رهبری ارول اردینچ این اثر را اجرا کرد.
