Quartet for the End of Time
Author: Olivier Messiaen; Tashi · 1941
About this work
An eight-movement chamber work for clarinet, violin, cello and piano that Messiaen wrote as a prisoner of war at Stalag VIII-A in Görlitz, Germany; it was first played on 15 January 1941 by three fellow prisoners with the composer at the piano, before an audience of inmates and guards. It draws on the Book of Revelation and the angel who announces the end of time, while the 'time' of the title also points to Messiaen's break with regular musical metre. Tashi's mid-1970s RCA recording is a reference for many critics; the Deutsche Grammophon version by Gil Shaham, Paul Meyer, Jian Wang and Myung-Whun Chung received a Grammy nomination.
