Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5
Author: Villa-Lobos; Victoria de los Ángeles · 1938
About this work
The fifth of Villa-Lobos's nine Bachianas Brasileiras, which fuse the spirit of Bach with Brazilian popular music, written for soprano and an ensemble of eight cellos in two movements: the Ária (Cantilena), to a text by Ruth Valadares Corrêa (1938), and the Dança (Martelo), to a poem by Manuel Bandeira (1945). The Ária opens with a wordless vocal line over plucked and singing cellos, and the piece became the composer's most famous work. The reference recording was made in Paris in the 1950s by Victoria de los Ángeles with Villa-Lobos conducting, for EMI; Bidú Sayão had earlier recorded it for Columbia under the composer.
