About this work

The fourth volume of Buda Musique's Paris-based Éthiopiques series was the first devoted to a single artist: Mulatu Astatke, the father of Ethio-jazz. It gathers fourteen instrumentals from two rare albums he made for Amha Records in Addis Ababa between 1969 and 1974, blending Ethiopian pentatonic modes with jazz, soul and Latin rhythms through horns, vibraphone and guitar. Jim Jarmusch's use of tracks such as Yègellé Tezeta and Yèkèrmo Sèw in Broken Flowers (2005) carried the record to new listeners worldwide.
