About this work
Neighbours report to the welfare office that a poor father and a blind mother have kept their twin daughters, Zahra and Massoumeh, shut indoors since childhood. A social worker sends the girls out into the street and locks the father in instead, and the twins discover play, shopping and friendship with other children for the first time. The Naderi family, who lived through the real events, play themselves; Samira Makhmalbaf's debut was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 1998.
