Author: F. W. Murnau · 1927
About this work
A woman from the city, lingering in a lakeside village after her holiday, seduces a farmer and urges him to drown his wife and run away with her. In the boat he cannot go through with it; the terrified wife flees and he follows her to the city, where the couple slowly find each other again over one long day, until a storm breaks over the lake on their way home. Told as a fable whose characters have no names, it was Murnau's first American film and won three awards at the first Academy Awards, including Unique and Artistic Picture and Best Actress for Janet Gaynor.
