Rashomon
Author: Akira Kurosawa · 1950
About this work
Sheltering from rain under the ruined Rashomon gate, a woodcutter, a priest and a commoner go over the contradictory testimonies they have heard about a samurai's death in a forest. The bandit (Toshiro Mifune), the samurai's wife, the samurai himself speaking through a medium, and finally the woodcutter each tell a different version, and none prevails. Based on two stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1951 and an honorary Academy Award, and gave its name to the 'Rashomon effect'.
