About this work

Upper Egypt, 1881. After the death of the chief of the mountain-dwelling Horabat clan, his two sons learn that their people have lived for generations by secretly selling treasures from a hidden cache of royal mummies. The elder brother, who objects, is killed, and Wanis, torn between loyalty to his clan and his conscience, must decide whether to reveal the tomb to the archaeologists who have come from Cairo. Based on a real discovery, it is Shadi Abdel Salam's only feature, made with Roberto Rossellini's backing, and it has been restored by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project.
