About this work
In a futuristic city, the privileged live among towers and pleasure gardens while workers toil at the machines in a city underground. Freder, son of the city's master Joh Fredersen, falls for Maria, a woman from the depths, and descends into the workers' world, while the inventor Rotwang builds a robot in Maria's likeness to mislead the workers and stir them to revolt. A fuller version was reconstructed after a 16mm print found in Buenos Aires in 2008 restored about 25 minutes of lost footage.
