About this work

In a dim café crowded with tables and chairs, two women in slips move blindly with eyes closed while a man frantically clears chairs from their path. A couple embraces again and again as a third man rearranges their bodies, until the woman keeps dropping from the man's arms and the repetition hardens into painful habit. Set to arias by Henry Purcell and drawing on Bausch's childhood memories of her parents' café, the piece long featured Bausch herself as one of the sleepwalking women.
