About this work

In a Mexico City slum, El Jaibo escapes from reform school and takes charge again of a gang of street boys. Pedro, a boy who craves his mother's affection, witnesses Jaibo kill a youth he blames for his arrest, and from then on every attempt Pedro makes to go straight is undone by Jaibo. Luis Buñuel won Best Director at Cannes in 1951 for the film, and in 2003 it was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
