About this work

In 1905 the sailors of the battleship Potemkin, cruising the Black Sea, rise up over maggot-ridden rations and take control of the ship. The people of Odessa row out with food in support, but Tsarist troops fire on the crowd on the city's great steps, and the rebel ship must then face the fleet sent to crush it. Commissioned for the twentieth anniversary of the 1905 uprising, the film's Odessa Steps sequence became one of the most quoted examples of montage in cinema history.
