About this work

On 8 May 1945, the last day of the Second World War, in a provincial Polish town, Maciek Chełmicki, a young Home Army fighter, is ordered to assassinate Szczuka, the newly arrived Communist district secretary, but his first attempt kills the wrong men. That night, at a hotel hosting a victory banquet, he meets the barmaid Krystyna and glimpses the possibility of an ordinary life, yet he carries out the order and himself dies at the end on a rubbish dump. Adapted from Jerzy Andrzejewski's 1948 novel and made after Poland's 1956 political thaw, it turned Zbigniew Cybulski into 'the Polish James Dean'.
