Author: Hou Hsiao-hsien · 1989
About this work
Beginning with Japan's surrender in 1945, the film follows the Lin family in Taiwan through the late 1940s. One brother is drawn into smuggling, framed and left brain-damaged; the deaf photographer Wen-ching (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) marries the nurse Hinomi amid the February 1947 massacre and martial law, but his links to an anti-Kuomintang group lead to his arrest and disappearance. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1989 and was among the first Taiwanese films to depict the February 28 Incident on screen.
