About this work
Abelardo I, a São Paulo moneylender who also owns a candle factory, has grown rich lending to debtors and the bankrupt, and now plans to marry the daughter of an impoverished aristocratic family to buy his way into the elite. Behind him stands an American capitalist, and his assistant Abelardo II waits to replace him. Oswald de Andrade wrote this savage comedy in 1933, but it was not staged until 1967. That year Teatro Oficina's flamboyant, anarchic production, directed by Zé Celso and designed by Hélio Eichbauer, became a starting point for Brazil's Tropicália movement. It was revived with the same design for its 50th anniversary in 2017.
آبلاردوی اول، رباخواری در سائوپائولو که کارخانهٔ شمع‌سازی هم دارد، از وام دادن به مردم بدهکار و ورشکسته ثروت اندوخته و حالا می‌خواهد با دختر خانواده‌ای اشرافی اما فقیرشده ازدواج کند تا به طبقهٔ بالا راه یابد. پشت سر او سرمایه‌دار آمریکایی ایستاده و دستیارش آبلاردوی دوم در کمین جانشینی اوست. اسوالد دی آندراده این کمدی گزنده را در ۱۹۳۳ نوشت، اما تا ۱۹۶۷ اجرا نشد. در آن سال اجرای پرزرق‌وبرق و آنارشیستی تئاتر اوفیسینا به کارگردانی زه سلسو با طراحی هلیو آیشباوئر به نقطهٔ آغاز جنبش تروپیکالیا در برزیل بدل شد و در ۲۰۱۷، در پنجاهمین سالگرد، با همان صحنه‌پردازی دوباره اجرا شد.
