About this work
Doctor Faust, a scholar weary of barren learning, makes a pact with Mephistopheles: if he ever tells a moment 'stay, you are so beautiful', his soul is forfeit. In Part One his love for Gretchen leads to her ruin; in Part Two (1832) Faust passes from the emperor's court and the mythic world of Greece to reclaiming land from the sea, and is finally redeemed.
