About this work

Orgon, a Parisian bourgeois, falls under the spell of the pious fraud Tartuffe, takes him into his home, promises him his daughter and signs over his property, ignoring his family's warnings. Only when he sees Tartuffe trying to seduce his wife Elmire are his eyes opened; in the end the king's decree rescues the family. The Church kept the play banned for years.
