About this work

Dionysus, god of wine and ecstasy, returns to Thebes in human form to have his divinity recognised. King Pentheus bans his rites but, lured by curiosity, goes to the mountain dressed as a woman to spy on the Bacchae, and is torn apart by his own mother Agave, who in her trance takes him for a lion.
