About this work
Rooh-Bekheir, an 18-year-old in a village in south-west Iran, turns down suitor after suitor while the state relocates the village for a development scheme; her family mistakes her silent rebellion for possession and calls an exorcist. The earliest surviving feature by an Iranian woman, shot clandestinely, edited in New York and never shown in Iran; restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in 2024.
