An old railway crossing keeper lives a monotonous life with his wife at a remote post, until officials arrive to tell him he has been retired. Through static shots and silence the film portrays an ageing worker's routine and helplessness amid rapid industrialisation; it won a Silver Bear at Berlin in 1974.
سوزنبان پیری سال‌هاست در ایستگاهی دورافتاده کنار ریل با همسرش زندگی یکنواختی دارد؛ روزی بازرسان راه‌آهن می‌آیند و به او خبر می‌دهند که بازنشسته شده است. فیلم با نماه‌ای ایستا و سکوت، روزمرگی و بی‌پناهی کارگری کهنسال را در دوران صنعتی‌شدن تصویر می‌کند و خرس نقره‌ای برلین ۱۹۷۴ را گرفت.
