About this work
1789 is a collective creation of the Théâtre du Soleil directed by Ariane Mnouchkine, premiered in Milan in November 1970 and played at the Cartoucherie in Paris from December 1970. Roberto Moscoso's design spread fairground-style stages across a former munitions warehouse, with the audience moving among them. It retold the early French Revolution through popular-theatre forms and drew more than 280,000 spectators.
