About this work
Grotowski's 'poor theatre' strips performance down to actor and spectator, relying on the actor's body, voice and movement rather than elaborate sets or effects. His Akropolis (Opole, 1962), designed with Józef Szajna, moved Wyspiański's drama from Kraków's Wawel cathedral into a concentration camp, where prisoners re-enact Western myths. The production went through five versions; the fifth (1967) toured Europe and New York and was filmed for television in 1968.
«تئاتر بی‌چیز» گروتوفسکی صحنه را به بازیگر و تماشاگر فرومی‌کاهد و بر توانایی‌های بدن، صدا و حرکت بازیگر تکیه دارد، بی‌آنکه به دکور و جلوه‌های پرهزینه نیاز باشد. در «آکروپولیس» (اوپوله، ۱۹۶۲)، متن ویسپیانسکی که در کلیسای واول کراکوف می‌گذرد به اردوگاه کار اجباری منتقل شد و زندانیان اسطوره‌های غرب را بازسازی می‌کنند؛ صحنه‌آرایی و لباس‌ها از یوزف شاینا بود. این اجرا چند نسخه داشت و نسخهٔ پنجم آن (۱۹۶۷) در اروپا و نیویورک اجرا و در ۱۹۶۸ برای تلویزیون فیلم‌برداری شد.
