Mother Courage and Her Children
Author: Bertolt Brecht and Erich Engel / Bertolt Brecht · 1949
About this work
Brecht's epic theatre uses distancing devices such as placards announcing each scene's title and place, half-height curtains and demonstrative, gestural acting, to keep spectators critically alert rather than absorbed. The 1949 Mother Courage at Berlin's Deutsches Theater, with Helene Weigel in the title role, was Brecht's first major success directing his own work, and its cast formed the core of the Berliner Ensemble. Brecht documented the staging in the Courage Model Book, and the production toured Europe, including Paris, for more than a decade.
