About this work

For Akira Kurosawa's Ran, Toru Takemitsu first imagined a score of stylised human voices, but Kurosawa insisted on a Mahler-like orchestral sound, a dispute that nearly led the composer to withdraw. The result is one of Takemitsu's most romantic film scores, which scholars argue adds layers of meaning that sometimes quietly contradict the director's vision.
