زندگی خانواده‌ای فقیر در روستایی در بنگال از نگاه پسر خردسال، آپو، و خواهرش دورگا. پدر برای کار دور است و مادر با تنگدستی دست‌وپنجه نرم می‌کند. نخستین فیلم سه‌گانهٔ آپو و نقطهٔ عطفی در سینمای هند.
