عَدُوٌّ مُبين‏

This is ghazal 2264 from the Divan of Shams, the collected lyric poems of Mevlana Jalal al-Din Rumi. The poem addresses a restless, quarrelsome self that resembles a young goat leaping upward, possessing nothing but beard. The speaker questions what name to give such a self, invoking divine protection against it. The poem names this self an evident enemy that plunders the portion of existence allotted to each being and obstructs human development and spiritual perfection.
