این کتاب به بررسی نقش ادبیات فارسی در سیاست میپردازد و دورهای پرتلاطم از تاریخ ایران را در فاصله سالهای ۱۹۵۰ تا ۲۰۰۰ در بر میگیرد. نویسنده، کریمیحقاق، نشان میدهد که چگونه روشنفکران ایرانی از شعر، نمایشنامه، رمان و داستان کوتاه برای اظهارنظر درباره تحولات سیاسی و اجتماعی بهره بردند. کتاب همچنین میکاود که این روشنفکران چگونه با سانسور، سرکوب، زندان، تبعید و حتی اعدام دستوپنجه نرم کردند. ویژگی برجسته اثر این است که نویسنده خود در رویدادهای مورد بررسی حضور داشته و دیدگاهی تجربی و مستقیم به کتاب بخشیده است.
