رساله ای تاریخی است که به بررسی پهنای رفت و آمد زبان فارسی در تاریخ جهان می پردازد. نویسنده نقش فارسی را به عنوان یکی از زبان ه‌ای مشترک در جهان اسلام و فراتر از آن مورد مطالعه قرار می دهد و می کوشد که ابعاد، تأثیر و راه کاره‌ای این زبان را روشن سازد. کتاب به صورت یک بررسی جامع، دستاورده‌ای جغرافیایی، ادبی و اجتماعی فارسی را در دوره پیش از جدید تشریح می کند و نشان می دهد که این زبان از سیبری تا جنوب شرق آسیا و بین لندن و پکن چه گسترش و محدودیت هایی داشته است.
