About this work
This is an essay exploring the origins and social purpose of literature, with a focus on storytelling and folklore. It argues that literature is a product of society and therefore shares society's goals. The desire to educate younger generations and transmit a people's history may explain the rise of epic and heroic narratives. Folktales and stories traveled with storytellers, camel drivers, and caravans across regions, absorbing the customs and traditions of each new people they encountered along the way.
