این اثر ترجمهٔ کتاب «ریشههای تاریخی افسانه» نوشتهٔ ولادیمیر یاکولویچ پروپ، یکی از برجستهٔ فولکلورشناسان روسی قرن بیستم، است. پروپ در این کتاب نظریات پایهٔ خود را که در «ریختشناسی افسانه» بیان کرده بود بر مواد واقعی یعنی افسانهٔ روسی و اروپایی به کار برده است. این اثر یک کار کلاسیک در حوزهٔ انتروپولوژی و فولکلورشناسی است که مطالعهٔ ریشههای تاریخی انواع مختلف افسانهٔ مردمی را از طریق مقایسهٔ موتیفهای افسانهای با واقعیتهای تاریخی پیگیری میکند.
