گابریله دانونتسیو شاعر ایتالیایی نخستین بار در سال ۱۸۷۹ با مجموعه شعری «پریمو وره» به دنیای ادبیات کلاسیک باستان پای گذاشت. این مجموعه در ابتدا شامل چهار ترجمه از اشعار هوراس بود و یک سال بعد با ویراست گستردهتری بازنشر شد که بیستوسه ترجمه از نوزده شعر لاتین، از جمله آثار کاتولوس، تیبولوس و هوراس، و همچنین چهار سرود هومری را دربر میگرفت. این اثر نشان میدهد که آشنایی دانونتسیو با ادبیات کلاسیک از همان آغاز فعالیت ادبیاش ریشهای عمیق داشته است.
