Sira al-Ibad is an allegorical and philosophical masnavi by Sanai Ghaznavi in which sea creatures are used as symbolic figures. In the poem's descriptions of the essences of water and air, each creature represents a negative moral quality arising from the temperaments associated with the four elements, as understood by classical philosophers. The oyster, tortoise, fish, whale, and crab each carry a distinct symbolic meaning tied to the vices that these temperaments produce in the human soul.
