Allusion and Ambiguity in the Poetic Perfection of Khujand

The collected poetry (divan) of Kamal al-Din Mas'ud Khanjadi is a substantial work consisting overwhelmingly of 982 mystical ghazals, with only a small fraction made up of other forms including four qasidas and scattered pieces labeled qat'at,dobeyti, ruba'i, masnavi, and one example of mostanad. The work is assessed in comparison with the ghazals of Sa'di, Molana, and Hafez, poets whom Kamal himself references throughout his verse. While the collection does not match those masters in artistic weight and refinement overall, it contains a notable number of individual couplets of genuine beauty, and Kamal is recognized as a significant ghazal poet.
