Artists in Tehran Still Face the Sealing of Their Venues
Eight productions at the Labkhand Theatre Complex have been halted, and reports say the venue has been sealed

Tehran's Labkhand Theatre Complex has suspended all performances until further notice. Iran International reported on 22 October that the venue had been sealed. According to Khabaronline, the complex gave no reason in its social media announcement. It only expressed regret over "the circumstances that have arisen" and apologised to ticket holders and theatre groups. Eight productions were halted. According to Mehr News Agency, the venue hosted the student Theatre Experience Festival on its first two days, 17 and 18 October, and the festival's shows there stopped after that. Mehr said unofficial reports point to a sealing but did not confirm it. No official has said which body ordered the closure or why.
The closure follows other recent restrictions. According to Honaronline, the culture ministry suspended Resonance of Imagination at Shahrzad Theatre Complex in April 2025, saying the staged show differed from the approved version. The Center for Human Rights in Iran documented at least 50 businesses, including cafés, that were sealed over "improper hijab" between late June and early October 2025. On 26 September 2026, Iran International reported two more cases. Tehran prosecutors had opened a case against the company of Tehran Paris Tehran over a scene between a male and a female actor.
Music has not been spared either. According to Euronews Persian, Mohsen Sharifian, leader of the Lian ensemble, announced on 30 September 2026 that the group's concert in Ahvaz had been cancelled because the producer had been asked to pledge that its female musicians would not appear on stage. Alireza Ghorbani's performance in Shandiz was postponed despite its permits, for what the Khorasan Razavi culture office called "certain timing considerations." On 13 October, the band Pallett cancelled its entire tour, saying its female musician had not been allowed on stage in some cities.
The closure came as Iranian artists are being honoured abroad. According to Variety, Majid Majidi won the Best Film award at the Busan International Film Festival on 15 October 2026 for Midday Meal. Jafar Panahi, who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in May 2025 for It Was Just an Accident, was sentenced in absentia by Tehran's Revolutionary Court that December to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban, Variety and Euronews reported. In June 2026, TheWrap reported, the court rejected his appeal and upheld the sentence. Art that is celebrated outside Iran meets closed venues, court cases and prison sentences at home.
